Google (2 billion convertible plus reported up to 40 billion additional) sells Claude through Vertex AI. Replicable only at foundation-model scale, but for Anthropic specifically it collapses three GTM motions — buyer, supplier, equity holder — into one relationship per cloud.

Anthropic does not look like a typical hypergrowth case.
The company spent two years before there was a public product. The single most awkward fact in its record — a 580 million dollar Series B led by Sam Bankman-Fried, six months before FTX collapsed — got absorbed in silence. Founder appearances are episodic, not daily. There has never been a viral consumer demo in the ElevenLabs sense.
And yet, by April 2026, Anthropic is at roughly 30 billion dollars in ARR, has passed OpenAI in revenue run-rate, sits on a 380 billion dollar Series G post-money against secondary-market offers reported at 800 billion, and counts eight of the Fortune 10 as customers.
The founding decision was the PBC structure
The OpenAI exodus is not the founding decision. Seven senior researchers leaving one employer to start another is, in startup terms, an unremarkable origin story.
The structural choice that made everything possible was incorporating Anthropic as a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation in early 2021. OpenAI by late 2020 was still a nonprofit with a capped-profit subsidiary; the structure was already being publicly criticized as incoherent. The PBC structure made Anthropic explicitly for-profit but legally bound to a stated public-benefit mission. That is the first concrete commitment that "safety-first" was not a marketing line — it was a legal constraint that every commercial decision afterward had to navigate around.
The founder team made the rest of the difference. The GPT-3 lead author (Tom Brown), the scaling laws authors (Sam McCandlish, Jared Kaplan), the Policy Director (Jack Clark), the interpretability lead (Chris Olah, founder of Distill.pub), and the safety-policy VP (Daniela Amodei) all walked out together. This is not "we left to start a startup." It is thesis-team-detaching-with-IP-in-their-heads. The thesis is implicit in everything that came next.
Two latent years before any product
The first two years look almost nothing like a startup. The Series A in May 2021 (124 million dollars led by Jaan Tallinn at roughly 550 million post-money) is announced with a single message: more compute for safety research. The Series B in April 2022 (580 million from Sam Bankman-Fried's Alameda Research) carries the same framing — more compute, more research, more interpretability work.
Three substrates were being built in parallel:
Research output as substrate. Constitutional AI (paper Dec 15, 2022), the scaling laws follow-ups, mechanistic interpretability papers from Olah's team. By the time Claude becomes a product, Anthropic has 18+ months of academic-grade output.
Cap-table prestige as substrate. Jaan Tallinn (Skype, long-time AI safety funder), Dustin Moskovitz (Asana CEO, Open Philanthropy backer), Eric Schmidt, Center for Emerging Risk Research. Philosophical capital before commercial capital.
Policy-engaged founder posture as substrate. Jack Clark's Policy Director hire, Dario's eventual willingness to do Senate testimony, the company positioning itself as the AI lab that talks to government before there is any commercial reason to.
Compare to other latent periods in the GrowthHunt cohort: Replit's eight years of platform work, Oura's seven years of sensor engineering, Cursor's one year of VS Code fork. Anthropic's substrate is closer to Linear's reputation substrate, but with research output as the artifact instead of ex-Coinbase / ex-Uber design credibility. It buys the right to be heard without product evidence.
The FTX entanglement, then silence
April 29, 2022. Sam Bankman-Fried, Alameda Research, and FTX-affiliated capital lead a 580 million dollar Series B. About 500 million comes from Alameda. Caroline Ellison, Jim McClave, and Nishad Singh participate.
Six months later, on November 11, 2022, FTX collapses. The Anthropic shares become part of the FTX bankruptcy estate. Across two tranches in 2024 (March 884 million dollars to a Mubadala-aligned UAE group; June about 450 million residual), the estate ultimately recovers roughly 1.3 billion on the original 500 million cost — a profit of about 800 million for FTX creditors.
Four facts are worth being explicit about:
Anthropic itself was not implicated in any wrongdoing. No founder or employee has been charged, named in proceedings, or otherwise tied to FTX's customer-fund misappropriation.
The original due diligence on Alameda has not been publicly addressed. Founders have not, to public knowledge, walked through how Alameda was vetted as Series B lead.
The capital itself proved structurally important. 500 million dollars in 2022 was an enormous training-compute budget at a time when competitors were not yet writing nine-figure checks. The Series B funded the Constitutional AI work and the Claude 1 training run. Without it, the timeline collapses.
The founders have not retroactively distanced themselves. Anthropic did not return capital, did not publicly criticize SBF post-collapse, did not host a "lessons learned" press cycle. The posture has been silence + execution.
The response was not to turn the crisis into GTM (the ElevenLabs forced-trust-posture playbook). It was to let the bankruptcy estate work its way through and reconcentrate attention on the next product release. That is a defensible choice. It is not a free choice.
Constitutional AI as proactive E1, not reactive crisis response
The single most important framing move in Anthropic's record is publishing Constitutional AI in December 2022, before Claude was a public product.
This is the ElevenLabs E1 mechanism inverted. ElevenLabs got a misuse incident (4chan, January 2023) and responded with a trust posture — paid-only voice cloning, AI Speech Classifier, traceability. Anthropic front-ran the misuse incident — published a safety method, framed Claude around "helpful, honest, and harmless," shipped Claude's Constitution as a public artifact in May 2023, published the Responsible Scaling Policy in September 2023, introduced the AI Safety Levels framework, testified before the Senate.
Same E1 mechanism. Opposite trigger pattern. The proactive register is arguably the harder mode to execute because it requires sustained safety investment before there is any commercial ROI signal. By the time Pfizer, Goldman Sachs, or Boeing's procurement teams started asking "why Claude over GPT," there were three years of public, dated, citeable safety artifacts to point at. None of this is marketing in the conventional sense. All of it functions as marketing in the procurement-cycle sense.
The hyperscaler stack — three GTM motions in one
September 25, 2023. Amazon announces a 4 billion dollar commitment (1.25 billion initial, 2.75 billion option). October 27, 2023. Google announces a 2 billion convertible note. Within five weeks, Anthropic has locked in two of the three major hyperscalers as simultaneously customer, supplier, and equity holder.
What this collapses:
The buyer. AWS / GCP enterprise procurement teams know Claude already runs on the hyperscaler's infrastructure. The procurement question collapses from "should we add a new AI vendor?" to "do we want to use the AI vendor our cloud provider has invested billions in?"
The supplier. Anthropic does not have to negotiate compute capacity at market rates with multiple counterparties. The investment terms include compute commitments.
The cap-table signal. When the same hyperscaler is investor + customer + supplier, every signal compounds. Sequoia / a16z / Lightspeed see it as a structural moat. Enterprise buyers see it as durability.
Amazon completes the original 4 billion commitment in March 2024 (CNBC: largest single venture investment in Amazon's history at announcement). November 2024: Amazon adds another 4 billion, total commitment 8 billion. April 24, 2026: Bloomberg reports Google plans up to 40 billion more.
The pattern is replicable only by foundation labs at hyperscaler-relevance scale, in a window when hyperscalers are actively desperate for an OpenAI alternative. It does not generalize down. But within the foundation-model peer set — OpenAI/Microsoft, Anthropic/Amazon+Google, Mistral/Microsoft — Anthropic has executed the broadest version (two hyperscalers, not one).

Eight rounds. Each co-announced with at least one of: a model release, a Fortune-tier customer disclosure, a hyperscaler partnership, a safety framework publication, or an ARR milestone. Anthropic is the most disciplined D1 stacker in the case base after Vercel. The single biggest acceleration is Claude Code — a Replit-Agent-shaped product wave that pulled a multi-billion-dollar revenue surface forward by 18 months. The difference is that Anthropic was not default-dead when Claude Code launched. The new product accelerated an already-healthy growth curve.

What's specific to Anthropic
Five preconditions stack to make this case hard to copy.
What's not in the public record
True ARR. Every figure here is journalist-sourced (The Information, Bloomberg, Sacra). Anthropic does not officially disclose ARR. The Series G announcement disclosed 14 billion; the 30 billion April 2026 figure is leak-derived. Margin and unit economics are not company-disclosed; one report from The Information (cited in Where's Your Ed At) put 2024 gross margin at negative 94 percent before improvement — a figure that, if accurate, is a structural overhang on the IPO narrative.
Constitutional AI implementation in current models. The original December 2022 paper describes the technique. Whether and how Constitutional AI is meaningfully reflected in Claude 4.x-era models versus simply being a 2022 research artifact is not authoritatively documented.
Compute commitments. Total compute spend, per-model training cost, and the Trainium-to-GPU ratio are not disclosed.
The Series B due-diligence record. Founders have not, to public knowledge, addressed how Alameda Research was vetted as Series B lead in April 2022.
Internal politics of the safety commitment. The Responsible Scaling Policy commits Anthropic to halt training if certain risk thresholds are crossed. To public knowledge, no commercial launch has been delayed because of an ASL escalation. Whether that is because the framework is well-calibrated or because it is more permissive than its rhetoric suggests is, on present evidence, unknowable.
Path to IPO. Multiple secondary sources reference an IPO trajectory. No S-1, no formal banker engagement, and no public statement of intent has appeared as of April 2026.
The closing observation is the one worth carrying. "Safety-first" works as positioning when the underlying thesis is genuinely investable — research credibility, cap-table signal, and product evidence stacked. Without those preconditions, "safety-first" is marketing theater. Anthropic is the case where the preconditions were genuinely present and the positioning compounded for five years. It is not a template that other teams can copy without the team-credentialing and capital-raising substrate.

The exodus was about pace, not personality
The departures began in December 2020. The directional dispute was about how fast OpenAI was shipping commercial products versus how slowly safety research could keep up. The Microsoft deal (closed in 2019, deepening through 2020) had reframed OpenAI from a research lab into a commercial partner of one of the largest cloud providers in the world. Safety work was becoming a downstream constraint on a commercial roadmap, not the upstream constraint on a research roadmap.
The cohort that left was not a single team. It was a cross-section: research leadership, scaling-laws authors, interpretability, and policy. The departures were structurally coordinated enough that Wikipedia cites a single "OpenAI exodus" event spanning late 2020.
The PBC structure was the structural innovation
Most AI startups in early 2021 were Delaware C-Corps. OpenAI itself was a nonprofit with a capped-profit subsidiary — a structure already being publicly criticized as incoherent.
Anthropic chose Delaware Public Benefit Corporation. Three things this changed:

The PBC framing said two things at once:
To investors: this is a real for-profit company that will optimize for return — not a nonprofit experiment.
To the procurement teams that would later evaluate Claude: safety-first is not marketing rhetoric. It is in the corporate charter. We cannot legally pivot away from it.
That second message would not start mattering for two years. By the time Pfizer's compliance team or Goldman Sachs's procurement organ asked "why Claude over GPT," the PBC structure was three years of legal evidence in the public record.
What the founder pedigree pre-committed

The 18 months before any product
From January 2021 to roughly March 2023, there is no public Anthropic product. Most startups would have shipped a leaky beta within six months for feedback. Anthropic chose to publish papers instead. The substrate accumulated:

The structural framing that matters
Four facts deserve to be stated explicitly because they get muddled in retrospective coverage.
1. Anthropic itself was not implicated in any wrongdoing. No founder, employee, or affiliate of Anthropic has been charged, named in proceedings as a culpable party, or otherwise tied to FTX's customer-fund misappropriation. The Anthropic stake was an outside investment by Alameda. The federal case against Sam Bankman-Fried later alleged that customer funds were used for outside investments — by reasonable inference including this stake — but Anthropic was the recipient, not the conduit.
2. The capital itself proved structurally important. 500 million dollars in 2022 was an enormous training-compute budget at a time when competitors were not yet writing nine-figure checks. The Series B funded:

Without the Series B, the timeline collapses by 12-18 months. Anthropic launches Claude later, raises the Amazon and Google rounds later, and arrives at the 2025 Claude Code window without the same capital cushion. The capital was load-bearing.
3. The founders have not addressed the original due diligence. This is the only meaningful gap in Anthropic's otherwise-meticulous public posture. Founders have not, to public knowledge, walked through how Alameda Research was vetted as the Series B lead in April 2022 — six months before publicly visible signs of FTX trouble, but presumably with some access to financials. There is no published "lessons learned" essay. There is no podcast appearance where the question is answered substantively.
4. The recovery to FTX creditors was a profit, not a loss. The Anthropic stake became part of the FTX bankruptcy estate. Across two tranches in 2024, the estate recovered:

On the original 500 million dollar cost, this was a profit of roughly 800 million dollars for FTX creditors. The "FTX lost money on Anthropic" framing that occasionally appears in retrospective coverage is wrong. Holding through 2026 — when the same stake would have been worth multiples more at the 380 billion Series G — would have been an even larger return, but the position was disposed of inside the bankruptcy timeline.
The choice not to make it GTM
Compare to the ElevenLabs playbook. ElevenLabs got a misuse incident (4chan, January 2023) and converted it into trust posture: paid-only voice cloning, AI Speech Classifier, traceability per generation, public statement on day two. The crisis became sales collateral.
Anthropic took the opposite approach with FTX. The posture was silence + execution.
No capital was returned. Anthropic did not voluntarily unwind the Series B.
No public criticism of SBF post-collapse. Other 2022-era SBF-adjacent recipients held public press cycles distancing themselves. Anthropic did not.
No "lessons learned" essay. No founder appearance addressing the due-diligence question at length.
No re-anchoring of the cap-table narrative. The Series C in May 2023 was led by Spark Capital and announced on its own terms, not as a "post-FTX" repositioning.
The closest thing to public acknowledgment was the November 2022 statement that Anthropic "was not aware" of the FTX accounting issues at the time of the Series B and had no commercial relationship with FTX beyond the equity investment.
The choice is defensible. Re-litigating the Series B publicly would have re-anchored the company's narrative around FTX for months, distracting from the Constitutional AI rollout and the Claude 1 launch. The cleanest absorption of the embarrassment was to ship the next product. By March 2023, "Anthropic launches Claude" was the news cycle. The FTX framing fell out of headlines.
But the choice was also not free. There is a real cost to the absence of a "how Alameda passed our Series B due diligence" public artifact. Compliance-conscious enterprise procurement teams would have welcomed it. The public record is silent.
What this case adds to the cohort
In the GrowthHunt MOVES.md taxonomy, this is closest to E1 in the negative register — a crisis the company had to absorb, not one it could convert into trust posture. ElevenLabs is the textbook E1 case in the reactive trust register: misuse incident → public fix → enterprise GTM. Anthropic with FTX is E1 in the silent absorption register: cap-table earthquake → no public reframe → ship next product.
Both are defensible. The proactive trust register (Constitutional AI published before any incident, the parallel mechanism in Anthropic's record) is arguably more powerful long-term but harder to execute.
The lesson is not that silence always wins. It is that the founders had a single coherent positioning thesis and were willing to risk public second-guessing to keep that thesis intact. The silence was a bet that the underlying B2 + E1-proactive frame was strong enough to absorb a Series B PR incident. By 2024 the bet had paid off — the FTX framing fell out of the procurement-conversation-set entirely.
Constitutional AI Published — How Anthropic Front-Ran the Trust Posture Three Years Before Enterprise Demand Materialized (Dec 2022)
arXiv 2212.08073 introduced RLAIF before Claude was a public product. Three years later, the paper is what enterprise procurement teams cite when picking Claude over GPT. Proactive E1, not reactive crisis response.
December 15, 2022. Anthropic publishes "Constitutional AI: Harmlessness from AI Feedback" on arXiv (paper number 2212.08073). The paper introduces RLAIF — Reinforcement Learning from AI Feedback — as an alternative to OpenAI's RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback).
Claude is not yet a public product. The first commercial Claude API will not launch until March 14, 2023, three months after the paper.
What RLAIF actually does
The technical contribution, framed for non-researchers:
RLHF (OpenAI's approach to GPT-3.5 / ChatGPT): humans rate model outputs, the model learns from those ratings. Scales by hiring more raters.
RLAIF (Anthropic's approach): the model generates a constitution of principles, evaluates its own outputs against those principles, and self-corrects. Scales by writing the constitution.
The technical merit is real. RLHF has well-known scaling problems — human raters are expensive, inconsistent, and a privacy surface. RLAIF, if it works, lets safety alignment scale with model capability rather than with rater headcount.
But the positioning contribution is what made the paper structural. By publishing Constitutional AI as a public, dated, citeable artifact in December 2022, Anthropic established three things at once:
A safety methodology with a public name. "Constitutional AI" became a label that journalists, procurement teams, and competitors could refer to.
A specific differentiator versus OpenAI. The paper explicitly frames RLAIF as an alternative to RLHF. The contrast was structural from day one.
A research artifact that pre-dated any commercial product. When Claude 1 launched in March 2023, "this is the company that published Constitutional AI" was already true.

The reactive register is more famous because it produces dramatic stories. The proactive register is harder to execute and arguably more powerful long-term. Three reasons:
No commercial ROI signal exists when the work is done. ElevenLabs knew the trust posture would help enterprise sales because the misuse incident had already happened. Anthropic in December 2022 had to invest in safety output before there was any procurement-team demand to justify it.
The artifact must compound over time. A single safety paper is not enough. Anthropic kept publishing — Claude's Constitution (May 2023), Responsible Scaling Policy (September 2023), AI Safety Levels framework, model cards — each artifact reinforcing the original frame.
The audience is not paying attention yet. In December 2022, "AI safety" was a niche academic topic. By 2024, when Pfizer and Goldman Sachs procurement teams started asking "why Claude over GPT," the artifact stack was citeable. Proactive E1 requires the sustained patience of investing in something that will not pay off for two years.

None of this is marketing in the conventional sense. All of it functions as marketing in the procurement-cycle sense. When a Fortune 500 compliance team evaluates Claude versus GPT, they have three years of dated, structured, citeable safety artifacts to point at. OpenAI's analogous output exists but is comparatively thinner and arrived later.
The compounding mechanism: the artifact stack does not have to be re-built for each procurement cycle. A new enterprise buyer in 2026 inherits the entire 2022-2026 record.
Why "front-running" was hard to copy
OpenAI eventually published its own analogues — the "Model Spec" (May 2024), Microsoft's "Responsible AI Standard," various policy frameworks. Google published "AI Principles." Mistral released safety documentation.
But the front-running advantage is structural, not just temporal. Anthropic's safety stack has:
Earlier dates. Constitutional AI predates GPT-4 by four months. Procurement teams notice publication order.
Higher technical density. Mechanistic interpretability research from Olah's team is academic-grade output that competitors do not match in volume.
A founder narrative consistent with the artifacts. Dario's Senate testimony, "Machines of Loving Grace" essay, and Lex Fridman appearance all reinforce the same frame the papers describe. Imitators with thinner public-record substrates are harder to credit.
Three years of front-running is hard to copy in 2026 even with unlimited budget. The 2022-2024 window — when "AI safety" was niche but Anthropic kept publishing — cannot be retroactively occupied.
Amazon 4B + Google 2B in Five Weeks — How Anthropic Locked Two Hyperscalers as Investor, Customer, and Supplier (Sep–Oct 2023)
Five weeks in late 2023 collapsed three GTM motions into one relationship per cloud. Replicable only by foundation labs at this scale, but it became the structural moat that powered the next three years of growth.
September 25, 2023. Amazon announces a 4 billion dollar commitment to Anthropic — 1.25 billion initial, 2.75 billion as an option. AWS becomes Anthropic's primary cloud. Trainium and Inferentia chips are part of the deal. Amazon Bedrock becomes a primary distribution channel.
October 27, 2023. Google announces a 2 billion dollar convertible note to Anthropic — 500 million wired immediately, 1.5 billion convertible to equity at the next round. Vertex AI distribution is bundled.
Five weeks. Two hyperscalers locked in.
What the deal collapsed
For most enterprise software companies, GTM has three separate motions:
Sell to the buyer. Convince a Fortune 500 IT department to procure your product.
Buy from suppliers. Negotiate compute, infrastructure, and software-vendor contracts.
Raise capital from investors. Convince VCs and growth equity to fund the next round.
Each motion has its own counterparties, sales cycles, and frictions. Anthropic in late 2023 collapsed all three into one relationship per cloud:

The collapse is structurally important because:
The buyer's procurement question changes. Instead of "should we add a new AI vendor?" the question becomes "do we want to use the AI vendor our cloud provider has invested billions in?" That is a fundamentally easier procurement to win.
The supplier negotiation goes away. Anthropic does not have to compete for compute capacity at market rates with multiple counterparties during the AI compute crunch of 2023-2024.
The cap-table signal compounds. Sequoia, a16z, Lightspeed, and ICONIQ in subsequent rounds saw Amazon + Google as a structural moat. Enterprise buyers saw it as durability.
The window mattered
The same deal would not be available in the same shape today.
In September 2023, ChatGPT had been live for ten months. OpenAI was the obvious leader. Microsoft had locked OpenAI exclusively through its 2019 / 2023 investments. AWS and Google Cloud were facing a structural problem: the most important software category of the next decade was being shipped through their largest competitor's cloud.
Both hyperscalers needed an OpenAI alternative they could:

Differentiate their own AI stories around
Co-sell with their own enterprise sales teams
Anthropic in September 2023 was the only foundation-model lab at hyperscaler-relevance scale that was not already locked to a hyperscaler. The Series C had closed in May 2023 at 4.1 billion dollars. Claude 1 had launched in March 2023, Claude 2 in July. The product was real. The team was credentialed. The safety stack was procurement-credible.
The deals closed quickly because the structural fit was obvious to both sides. Five weeks between Amazon and Google was not the result of careful sequencing — it was the result of two hyperscalers racing each other to lock in the same alternative.

By April 2026, Amazon had committed 8 billion dollars and Google had positioned for up to 42 billion more. Both clouds were running Claude as a flagship third-party AI vendor. AWS Bedrock and Google Vertex AI both offered Claude as a top-tier option in their AI catalogs.
What's replicable and what's not
The pattern is replicable only by foundation labs at hyperscaler-relevance scale, in a window when hyperscalers are actively desperate for an alternative to a competitor's locked-in lab. App-layer and tool-layer companies do not get this option — hyperscalers do not invest billions to acquire startups as a distribution channel.
But within the foundation-model peer set, Anthropic executed the broadest version of the pattern:

Anthropic / Amazon + Google. Two hyperscalers, parallel relationships.
Mistral / Microsoft. One hyperscaler, smaller scale.
Cohere / Oracle + others. Multi-vendor but smaller commitments.
Two parallel hyperscaler relationships gave Anthropic structural diversification. If either Amazon or Google's strategic priorities shifted, the other relationship absorbed the impact. Neither hyperscaler had veto leverage on Anthropic's cap-table or distribution decisions. The trade-off was that managing two parallel partnerships required more operational discipline than a single deep exclusivity.
What this case adds to the cohort
In MOVES.md taxonomy, this is the cleanest C1 (bundled milestone) + structural cap-table positioning case in the GrowthHunt knowledge base. The Series C in May 2023 had set up the lab as an investable foundation-model company. The Amazon and Google rounds in September-October 2023 turned that investability into structural distribution.
The pattern only works for foundation labs. But the underlying principle — use one investment relationship to collapse multiple GTM motions — is more general. The lesson for non-foundation-lab teams is that strategic investors who simultaneously become customers and suppliers compound differently than financial-only investors. Even at smaller scales, the structural collapse is worth pursuing where possible.
Claude Code Research Preview — The 9-Month Ramp from Launch to ~1B ARR (Feb 2025)
February 24, 2025: Claude 3.7 Sonnet plus a research preview of a terminal-native coding agent. By November 2025, Claude Code had crossed roughly 1 billion dollars in ARR — a Replit-Agent-shaped product wave that pulled a multi-billion-dollar revenue surface forward by 18 months.
February 24, 2025. Anthropic announces Claude 3.7 Sonnet — the first hybrid reasoning model, a single model with both normal-response and extended-thinking modes. Bundled in the same announcement: a research preview of Claude Code, a terminal-native coding agent.
The research preview becomes general availability in May 2025. The web version ships October 20, 2025. By November 2025, multiple sources confirm Claude Code has crossed ~1 billion dollars in ARR.

What Claude Code is, briefly
Claude Code is a developer agent that runs in the terminal. It reads the codebase, writes code, runs commands, edits files, reviews diffs. Claude 4 (May 2025) achieved 72.5 percent on SWE-bench, framed as "world's best coding model" at launch. Claude Code is the product surface for that capability.

The terminal-native framing was the structural choice. Cursor and Copilot embedded in editors, accepting whatever LLM you wired in. Claude Code skipped the editor entirely and ran in the shell, with the foundation model and the agent shipping as one product. Cursor was a fork — Anthropic's bet was that Cursor was a wrapper.
Why the ramp was this fast
Three reasons compounded:
1. Distribution was already in place. Anthropic had AWS Bedrock and Google Vertex distribution from the September-October 2023 hyperscaler rounds. Enterprise developers running Claude inference through their existing cloud accounts could spin up Claude Code with no procurement friction. Cursor and other competitors had to negotiate enterprise contracts from cold.
2. The model lead was visible. Claude 4 Opus at 72.5 percent SWE-bench (May 2025) was a benchmark lead Cursor / Copilot could not match because they did not own the model. The "world's best coding model" framing was the public face of an underlying capability gap. By the time Cursor or GitHub Copilot caught up to Claude 4 capability, Anthropic had shipped Claude 4.5 (September 2025) and 4.7 (April 2026).
3. Bundling with funding rounds. The Series E (March 3, 2025, 3.5 billion at 61.5 billion post-money) bundled Claude 3.7 Sonnet plus the Claude Code research preview. The Series F (September 1, 2025, 13 billion at 183 billion post-money) bundled Sonnet 4.5. Each round doubled as a Claude Code press cycle.

Claude Code is the higher-magnitude ramp by absolute dollars but the lower-stakes ramp strategically. Anthropic was not default-dead in February 2025. Replit was. The Claude Code launch was a discretionary acceleration; the Replit Agent launch was a forced product rebirth.
What's specific to Anthropic here
Three preconditions made the ramp possible that are not generalizable:
Owning the foundation model. Cursor, Copilot, and Cognition consumed external models. Claude Code shipped with Anthropic's own Claude 4 inside it. The benchmark lead at launch (and the ability to ship 4.5, 4.7 successors at Anthropic's own pace) is structurally unavailable to wrapper companies.
Hyperscaler distribution from 2023. The September-October 2023 Amazon and Google rounds were what made Claude Code's enterprise distribution friction-free in 2025. Foundation labs without parallel hyperscaler relationships cannot replicate this.
Bundling capital with product. The Series E and F windows aligned with Claude 3.7 Sonnet + Claude Code preview and Sonnet 4.5 launches respectively. Companies without active funding cycles cannot bundle as cleanly.
The lesson is not "ship a coding agent" — it is the foundation-lab D1 upgrade is structurally enabled by owning the model + already-locked distribution + capital cadence. Cursor and Cognition will respond, but they will respond from a structurally less complete position.

The volumetric difference — Anthropic raised more in Series G alone (30 billion) than ElevenLabs raised across all six rounds — does not change the underlying mechanic. What the new strategic checks signaled
Microsoft and Nvidia as new investors in Series G is the structurally interesting signal. Both had been notably absent from prior rounds.
Microsoft. OpenAI's exclusive cloud partner since 2019, with cumulative commitments north of 13 billion dollars to OpenAI by 2024. Microsoft taking a position in Anthropic's Series G is the first public indication that Microsoft is hedging the OpenAI exclusivity. Even a small position changes the strategic calculus — both companies now have a competitive read on each other's economics.
Nvidia. The compute supplier to all foundation-model labs. Nvidia rarely takes equity positions in foundation-model labs because it does not need the strategic alignment to sell GPUs. A Nvidia investment in Series G is closer to a competitive read on which labs will continue ordering at scale.
Both checks are structurally signaling. Neither is the round's economic anchor. GIC and Coatue are the lead investors and the dollar-volume drivers. Microsoft and Nvidia are the strategic-narrative anchors.
What 8 of Fortune 10 actually means
The Series G announcement disclosed that eight of the ten largest U.S. companies by revenue use Claude as customers. The Fortune 10 in early 2026 (in approximate order) is Walmart, Amazon, Apple, UnitedHealth Group, ExxonMobil, Berkshire Hathaway, Alphabet, McKesson, Cencora, and Microsoft. Anthropic's "8 of 10" framing implies most of these — the publicly named ones include Pfizer-adjacent buyers, Goldman Sachs, Boeing, and Bridgewater Associates.
The procurement story is what makes this metric structurally consequential:
